Südengland im 19. Jahrhundert. Der verarmte Jack Durbeyfield schickt seine Tochter Tess zu den reichen d’Urbervilles. Dort erhält sie eine Anstellung. Nach einem Tanzabend wird sie vom eitlen Alec vergewaltigt und seine Geliebte. Tess erwartet ein Kind und flieht. Das Kind stirbt bei der Geburt. Tess wird Magd, heiratet den Pfarrersohn Angel, der nach Übersee geht, als er von ihrer Vergangenheit erfährt. Tess wird Tagelöhnerin und trifft Alec wieder. Angel kehrt zurück, findet Tess und Alec in einer Pension. Tess ermordet Alec, flieht mit Angel und wird in Stonehenge verhaftet.
