Karen Silkwood arbeitet wie ihr Freund Drew Stephens und ihre Freundin Dolly Peliker in der Plutonium-Fabrik "Kerr-McGee" in Cimarron, Oklahoma. Tagtäglich werden sie nach der Arbeit auf Strahlenbelastung kontolliert. Als eines Tages der Zeiger bei Karen ausschlägt, glaubt man zuerst an einen technischen Fehler.
